Geological Origin

Rustenburg granite — also traded internationally as Nero Impala, Impala Black, or African Grey — is quarried from the Bushveld Igneous Complex in South Africa's North West Province, near the city of Rustenburg. This geological formation is one of the largest layered igneous intrusions on Earth, formed approximately 2 billion years ago when molten magma cooled slowly beneath the surface, producing a coarse-grained norite with tightly interlocking mineral crystals.

Afrika National Granite owns and operates quarries in this region, giving us direct control over block selection, extraction methods, and material grading from the point of origin. This vertical integration — quarry ownership through to slab manufacturing at our Alrode facility — is what allows us to guarantee the colour consistency and grain uniformity that fabricators and distributors depend on.

Mineral Composition & Appearance

Rustenburg granite's distinctive appearance comes from its mineral makeup:

  • Plagioclase feldspar — provides the dark grey-to-black base colour
  • Pyroxene (hypersthene and augite) — contributes the deep black tones
  • Biotite mica — creates the subtle silver-grey reflective flecks visible when polished
  • Minor quartz — adds to overall hardness and durability

The result is a stone with a consistent dark charcoal-to-black colour with fine, evenly distributed silver-grey mineral flecks. Unlike many granites that show dramatic veining or colour variation between slabs, Rustenburg granite is valued specifically for its uniformity — fabricators can order multiple slabs across different batches and achieve a consistent visual result.

Technical Properties

These properties make Rustenburg granite suitable for high-specification commercial and residential applications:

PropertyValue
Density2,900 – 3,050 kg/m³
Compressive strength>200 MPa
Flexural strength15 – 20 MPa
Water absorption<0.4%
Hardness (Mohs scale)6 – 7
Abrasion resistanceExcellent

The low water absorption rate (<0.4%) means Rustenburg granite performs well in wet environments — bathrooms, pool surrounds, and exterior cladding — without requiring excessive sealing. Its compressive strength of over 200 MPa exceeds the requirements for virtually all architectural applications, including high-traffic commercial flooring.

Available Finishes

At Afrika National Granite, we offer Rustenburg granite in six standard finishes, each creating a different look and surface texture for different applications:

Polished

A high-gloss reflective finish that brings out the full depth of the stone's colour and mineral structure. The polished surface highlights the silver-grey flecks against the dark base, creating a refined, contemporary look. Best for kitchen countertops, vanity tops, reception desks, and interior feature walls where visual impact matters.

Honed

A smooth, matte finish with a soft sheen rather than a mirror reflection. Honed Rustenburg granite has a slightly lighter appearance than polished and offers excellent slip resistance. Ideal for bathroom floors, commercial flooring, and surfaces where a subtle, understated look is preferred.

Flamed

Created by applying intense heat to the stone surface, causing the minerals to fracture and produce a rough, textured finish. Flamed granite provides superior slip resistance (R11-R12 ratings) and is the standard choice for outdoor applications — pool surrounds, exterior paving, entrance steps, and public walkways.

Leathered

A textured finish that retains the stone's natural colour while adding a soft, tactile surface. Leathered granite hides fingerprints and water marks better than polished surfaces, making it a practical choice for busy kitchens and high-use commercial surfaces.

Bush Hammered

A heavily textured finish created by mechanical impact, producing a rough, dimpled surface. This finish is primarily used for exterior cladding, landscape features, and applications where a raw, natural stone aesthetic is desired.

Sandblasted

A uniformly rough, matte finish created by blasting the surface with abrasive material. Sandblasted Rustenburg granite offers good slip resistance and a lighter colour tone than polished. Commonly used for exterior paving, monument work, and architectural cladding.

Common Applications

Kitchen & Bathroom Surfaces

Rustenburg granite's heat resistance (withstands temperatures well above 300°C), scratch resistance (Mohs 6-7), and low porosity make it one of the most practical choices for kitchen countertops and bathroom vanities. The polished finish is the most popular for these applications, though leathered is increasingly specified for contemporary kitchens.

Commercial Flooring & Cladding

The stone's compressive strength and abrasion resistance make it suitable for high-traffic commercial environments — hotel lobbies, office foyers, retail spaces, and public buildings. Honed or flamed finishes are typically specified for flooring, while polished or bush hammered finishes are used for wall cladding.

Outdoor & Landscape

Flamed Rustenburg granite is widely used for pool surrounds, exterior paving, steps, and landscape features. Its low water absorption and frost resistance make it suitable for exposed outdoor applications. ANG supplies granite pavers, cobblestones, kerbs, and bollards in Rustenburg stone for landscape projects.

Tombstones & Memorials

Rustenburg granite is one of the most specified stones for tombstone and memorial work in Southern Africa. Its consistent colour ensures matching across components (headstones, bases, ledgers, borders), and it polishes to a deep, dignified finish that weathers gracefully over decades. ANG supplies tombstone manufacturers with slab stock and pre-cut components.

Export Markets

Rustenburg granite is exported from South Africa to markets across Europe, Africa, and beyond. ANG currently exports to Botswana, Mozambique, Poland, Hungary, Montenegro, Slovakia, and Croatia, with active expansion into Germany, the UK, and several additional African and Eastern European markets. Export-grade material is first-choice only, meeting the tightest international tolerances for colour consistency and dimensional accuracy.
