Granite: The Landscape Architect's Most Durable Material

In outdoor landscaping, material longevity is not optional — it is the defining specification requirement. Exposure to UV radiation, freeze-thaw cycles, moisture, vehicle loads, and constant foot traffic means that any material used outdoors must withstand decades of environmental stress without degradation. Natural granite meets every one of these demands, which is why it has been the material of choice for prestige landscaping projects worldwide for centuries.

For landscape architects, landscaping contractors, and property developers in South Africa and internationally, this guide covers the full range of granite landscaping products, surface finishes, and specification considerations for outdoor projects.

Granite Pavers

Granite pavers are flat-sawn or split natural stone units used for pedestrian and vehicular paving. They offer superior longevity and aesthetic quality compared to concrete pavers or clay bricks.

Standard Paver Sizes

  • 200 x 100 mm — The classic brick-format paver for herringbone, basket-weave, and stretcher bond patterns. The most versatile and widely specified size.
  • 300 x 300 mm — Square format for contemporary grid layouts and mixed-material designs.
  • 400 x 200 mm — Rectangular format for linear layouts, pathways, and modern paving designs.
  • 600 x 300 mm — Large-format pavers for premium residential and commercial landscaping. Creates a clean, contemporary aesthetic with fewer joints.
  • Random lengths — Mixed-length pavers in a fixed width for informal, natural-looking courses. Popular for garden paths and heritage-style projects.

Thickness

  • 30 mm — For pedestrian-only applications on a mortar bed or adhesive substrate.
  • 50 mm — Standard thickness for residential pedestrian paving and light vehicular use on a compacted bedding layer.
  • 60-80 mm — Heavy-duty specification for driveways, parking areas, and commercial vehicular traffic on a compacted sub-base.

Surface Finishes for Pavers

  • Flamed — The standard specification for outdoor pavers. Excellent slip resistance, natural texture, and consistent appearance.
  • Bush-hammered — A more heavily textured finish for maximum traction. Specified for ramps, pool surrounds, and public spaces where safety is paramount.
  • Sawn and sandblasted — Clean-cut faces with a textured top surface. Creates a modern, precise aesthetic while maintaining slip resistance.
  • Natural split — Rough, irregular surfaces created by splitting the stone along its natural grain. Used for rustic pathways, heritage projects, and naturalistic garden designs.

Granite Cobblestones

Cobblestones are small, compact granite units with a long history in European and South African urban design. Their combination of strength, flexibility, and aesthetic character makes them ideal for both traditional and contemporary landscape applications.

Common Cobblestone Sizes

  • 100 x 100 x 50 mm — Standard small cobble for detailed patterns, edging, and pedestrian areas.
  • 100 x 100 x 100 mm (cube) — The classic European cobblestone format. Laid on a compacted bedding layer for pedestrian and light vehicular applications.
  • 200 x 100 x 100 mm — Sett format for heavier applications and broader paving patterns.
  • Irregular/tumbled — Cobbles with rounded edges for a weathered, heritage appearance.

Laying Patterns

Cobblestones offer exceptional design flexibility. Common patterns include fan (arc) patterns for driveways and plazas, herringbone for maximum interlock and load distribution, running bond for pathways, and soldier courses for edging and borders. The pattern choice affects both the aesthetic and the structural performance of the paved surface.

Granite Step Treads

Natural granite step treads combine structural performance with visual impact. They are specified for garden steps, entrance staircases, terraced landscaping, and retaining wall caps.

Standard Step Dimensions

  • Tread depth: 300-400 mm (measured front to back)
  • Tread width: Custom to project — typically 900 mm minimum for residential, 1,200+ mm for commercial
  • Thickness: 30-50 mm for treads on a masonry substrate; 100-150 mm for solid monolithic steps
  • Nosing: 20-30 mm overhang with a pencil-round or chamfered edge for safety

Surface Treatment

Step treads should always have a slip-resistant finish on the top surface. Flamed or bush-hammered finishes are standard. Many specifiers combine a flamed top surface with a polished or honed riser face for visual contrast. The front edge (nosing) should be clearly visible — either through a contrasting finish or by leaving a natural exposed edge.

Granite Retaining Walls

Granite blocks and cladding are used for retaining walls that combine structural function with aesthetic quality:

  • Solid granite blocks — Massive natural stone blocks (typically 400 x 200 x 200 mm or larger) dry-stacked or mortared to create gravity retaining walls. The weight of the granite itself resists soil pressure. Suitable for walls up to approximately 1.2 m in height without engineering design.
  • Granite-clad concrete walls — For taller retaining walls, a reinforced concrete structural wall is clad with granite panels or split-face blocks. This approach provides the engineering strength of reinforced concrete with the natural beauty of granite facing.
  • Gabion walls with granite fill — Wire gabion baskets filled with granite rubble or offcuts create permeable retaining walls with a distinctive industrial-natural aesthetic.

Water Features and Pools

Granite is the ideal material for landscape water features due to its impermeability and weather resistance:

  • Pool copings — Flamed or bush-hammered granite copings around swimming pools provide slip resistance, durability, and a premium aesthetic. Standard coping widths are 300-400 mm with a bullnose or pencil-round pool edge.
  • Fountain surrounds — Polished or honed granite for formal fountain basins and surrounds in commercial and residential landscapes.
  • Water channels — Precision-cut granite channels for rill features and water courses in contemporary landscape designs.
  • Stepping stones — Thick granite slabs (50-80 mm) set into gravel or across shallow water features.

Specification Guidance for Landscape Professionals

  • Sub-base design — All granite paving requires a properly designed sub-base. For pedestrian areas: 100-150 mm compacted G5 or crusher run. For vehicular areas: 150-200 mm compacted sub-base with a 25-30 mm bedding layer of sharp sand or grit.
  • Jointing — Use kiln-dried sand, polymeric sand, or mortar joints depending on the application. Polymeric sand is recommended for residential paving as it resists weed growth and insect penetration.
  • Drainage — Natural stone paving is impermeable. Design adequate falls (minimum 1:60 for paving, 1:40 preferred) and drainage points to manage surface water.
  • Edging — All paved areas require edge restraint. Use granite kerb stones, concealed metal edging, or mortar haunching to prevent paver creep.
  • Sealing — External granite paving generally does not require sealing. If a client requests enhanced stain resistance (for braai areas or outdoor kitchens), a breathable impregnating sealer can be applied.
