Why Granite Works in Bathrooms
Bathrooms are demanding environments. Surfaces deal with constant moisture, temperature fluctuations from hot showers, soap residue, cosmetics, and daily physical contact. Most materials compromise on either durability or aesthetics — granite delivers both.
Key properties that make granite suitable for bathroom use:
- Water absorption below 0.4%: Granite is naturally low-porosity, meaning it resists water penetration far better than marble, limestone, or most engineered alternatives
- Heat resistance: Hot styling tools, steam from showers, and heated towel rails won't damage granite surfaces
- Scratch resistance: Mohs hardness of 6–7 means daily contact with bathroom items won't mark the surface
- Hygiene: The dense, non-porous surface doesn't harbour bacteria or mould when properly sealed and cleaned
- Longevity: A granite vanity or shower panel will outlast the bathroom itself — typically 30+ years without replacement
Best Finishes for Bathroom Applications
The finish you choose matters more in a bathroom than almost any other room, because of the constant presence of water. Here's how each finish performs in wet environments:
Polished — Best for Vanity Tops & Feature Walls
The high-gloss reflective finish is the most popular choice for bathroom vanities. It showcases the stone's colour depth, is the easiest to clean, and its smooth surface sheds water quickly. However, polished granite can be slippery when wet, so it's not recommended for flooring in shower areas.
Best applications: vanity tops, feature walls, bath surrounds, window sills.
Honed — Best for Bathroom Floors
The smooth matte finish provides better grip than polished while still feeling refined underfoot. Honed granite is the go-to choice for bathroom floors where slip resistance matters but you still want an elegant, contemporary look. It shows water spots less than polished.
Best applications: bathroom floors, shower benches, large-format wall panels.
Flamed — Best for Shower Floors & Wet Rooms
The rough, textured surface created by flame treatment provides the highest slip resistance (R11-R12 ratings). This makes it suitable for shower floors, wet room flooring, and any surface where bare feet meet wet stone. The trade-off is a rougher texture and a slightly lighter colour than polished.
Best applications: shower floors, wet room flooring, outdoor shower areas, pool-adjacent bathrooms.
Bathroom Applications
Vanity Tops
The most common bathroom granite application. A single slab vanity top eliminates grout lines, creating a seamless surface that's easy to clean and visually striking. ANG can supply slabs up to 3200x1800mm, large enough for double vanities without joins.
Popular granite choices for vanities:
- Rustenburg Polished: Dark, consistent colour that hides water marks and soap residue
- Zimbabwe Black Polished: Deep uniform black for minimalist contemporary bathrooms
- Calacatta D'Oro Quartzite: White with gold veining for a marble look with quartzite durability
- Crystal Rose: Warm pink tones for softer, warmer bathroom palettes
Shower Walls & Panels
Full-height granite panels in showers eliminate the grout maintenance problem entirely. Unlike tiled showers where grout lines attract mould and require regular resealing, granite panels offer a continuous, waterproof surface. Polished or honed finishes are typical for shower walls.
Bathroom Flooring
Granite tiles or slabs for bathroom floors offer unmatched longevity compared to ceramic tiles, vinyl, or engineered alternatives. Honed or flamed finishes are recommended for slip resistance. ANG supplies granite tiles in standard sizes and custom cut-to-size for bathroom floor applications.
Bath Surrounds
A granite surround transforms a freestanding or built-in bath into a statement feature. The stone handles the constant splash exposure without deteriorating, and its thermal mass means it retains warmth from the bath water, creating a comfortable surface to lean against.
Feature Walls
A full-height granite feature wall behind the vanity or bath creates a focal point that anchors the bathroom design. Bookmatched slabs — where two consecutive slabs from the same block are placed mirror-image — create a dramatic symmetrical pattern, particularly effective with veined stones like Patagonia or Rain Forest Green Marble.
Design Approaches
Monochromatic Minimal
Use a single granite type across vanity, floor, and shower panels for a seamless, contemporary look. Rustenburg granite in honed finish works particularly well for this approach — its consistent colour creates visual calm, and the matte finish adds subtle texture without visual noise.
Contrast & Accent
Pair a dark granite vanity top (Rustenburg or Zimbabwe Black) with lighter walls, or use a dramatic exotic stone (Rain Forest Green, Patagonia) as a feature wall against neutral surroundings. This approach lets the stone be the hero piece without overwhelming the space.
Warm & Organic
Stones like Crystal Rose Granite or Paradiso Classico bring warm tones to bathrooms that might otherwise feel cold and clinical. Pair with timber cabinetry and brass fixtures for a bathroom that feels inviting rather than stark.
Practical Considerations
- Sealing: Seal bathroom granite at installation and reseal every 1–2 years, particularly surfaces in the splash zone around vanities and baths
- Weight: Granite is heavy (approximately 50–60 kg per m² at 20mm thickness). Ensure your bathroom substructure can support the weight, particularly for large wall panels
- Edge profiles: For vanity tops, consider eased or bullnose edges rather than sharp square edges — bathrooms involve bare skin contact more than kitchens
- Drainage: Shower floors in granite should be properly sloped toward the drain. Flamed granite's textured surface helps with water channelling
