South Africa: The Natural Granite Supplier for the Region
Southern Africa's construction and development markets — Botswana, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Namibia, Malawi, and beyond — depend on South Africa as their primary source of manufactured granite products. South Africa's established quarrying industry, modern processing facilities, and overland transport infrastructure make it the default supply origin for granite slabs, tiles, countertops, and landscaping products throughout the SADC region.
Afrika National Granite has been supplying neighbouring countries from our Alrode facility for years. Our proximity to major cross-border transport corridors means we can deliver granite products efficiently to any destination in Southern Africa.
Products for the Southern African Market
Polished Slabs
Polished Rustenburg granite slabs in 20 mm and 30 mm thickness remain the core product for regional markets. Applications include countertop fabrication, tombstone and memorial manufacturing, and commercial cladding and flooring. Both K2 and Sonop variations are available, with Sonop preferred for memorial applications and K2 popular for countertops and general construction.
Tombstone Components
The tombstone and memorial market is a significant demand driver across Southern Africa. ANG supplies polished slab blanks and pre-cut components for monument manufacturers in Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, and neighbouring countries. Component sizes include headstone blanks, base slabs, cross pieces, and custom elements.
Tiles and Flooring
Polished, honed, and flamed granite tiles for commercial and residential flooring applications. As commercial construction standards rise across the region, demand for natural stone flooring in lobbies, retail spaces, and hospitality venues is increasing.
Countertops and Cut-to-Size
ANG's cut-to-size facility can supply pre-cut countertop blanks and custom-dimensioned products for regional buyers who do not have their own fabrication equipment. This is particularly relevant for smaller markets where local fabrication capacity is limited.
Landscaping Products
Cobblestones, pavers, kerb stones, and step treads for landscaping and outdoor paving projects. As residential estate and commercial developments grow across the region, the specification of quality external paving is increasing.
Overland Logistics
Southern African deliveries are primarily overland, using South Africa's established cross-border transport corridors:
Botswana
The closest and most straightforward cross-border market. Deliveries from Alrode to Gaborone take 5-8 hours via the N1/N4 corridor and Tlokweng border post. For northern Botswana (Francistown, Maun), deliveries route via the N1 to Beit Bridge or via Groblersbrug border post. Transit times to Francistown are typically 8-12 hours.
Mozambique
Deliveries to Maputo route via the N4/Maputo Corridor through Komatipoort border post. Transit time from Alrode to Maputo is approximately 6-8 hours. For central Mozambique (Beira), deliveries route via Zimbabwe or through the Ressano Garcia corridor with onward transport north. Maputo-area deliveries are the most efficient; deliveries further north may warrant maritime shipping via Durban to Beira port.
Zimbabwe
Deliveries route via the N1 to Beit Bridge border post, then via the A4 highway to Harare. Transit time from Alrode to Harare is approximately 12-16 hours. Bulawayo is closer at approximately 8-10 hours. Zimbabwe's demand for granite is driven by commercial construction, memorial products, and residential development.
Zambia
Deliveries to Lusaka route through Zimbabwe (Beit Bridge → Harare → Chirundu border) or via Botswana (Kazungula). The Zimbabwe route is typically 18-24 hours transit. Demand is driven by commercial construction in Lusaka and copper belt development.
Namibia
Deliveries to Windhoek route via the N14/Trans-Kalahari corridor or the N1/N7 western route. Transit time is approximately 16-20 hours depending on route. Namibia's construction market is smaller but includes premium hospitality and commercial projects that specify natural stone.
Malawi
Deliveries route through Zimbabwe and Mozambique (Tete corridor) or through Zimbabwe and Zambia. Transit times are 24-36 hours. Maritime shipping via Durban to Nacala port (Mozambique) with overland to Malawi is an alternative for larger orders.
Cross-Border Logistics Considerations
- Customs clearance — ANG provides all export documentation required for SADC cross-border trade. Our logistics partners have experience with border procedures at all major Southern African border posts.
- Transport costs — Granite is heavy (a standard flatbed carries 20-28 tonnes). Transport costs are a significant component of delivered pricing, so efficient routing and full-truck loads are important for cost management.
- Border delays — Border processing times vary. Beit Bridge can experience significant delays during peak periods. We plan deliveries to minimise border waiting time where possible.
- Insurance — Full transit insurance is recommended for cross-border granite shipments. ANG can advise on insurance options.
Trade Agreements and Tariffs
Southern African countries benefit from preferential trade arrangements under the SADC Trade Protocol, which provides for reduced or zero import tariffs on goods originating from member states. South African granite exported to SADC countries generally qualifies for preferential tariff treatment with a valid SADC certificate of origin. ANG provides certificates of origin for all regional export orders.

For regional buyers, ANG offers:
