Why Exotic Stone?

Most granite projects in South Africa use Rustenburg granite — and for good reason. It is competitively priced, consistently available, technically excellent, and versatile across every application from kitchen countertops to exterior paving. But there are projects where Rustenburg is not what the client wants. A designer specifying a statement kitchen island. An architect creating a feature wall that needs to stop people in their tracks. A homeowner who has seen Rain Forest Green marble online and will not settle for anything else.

For these projects, exotic natural stones offer colours, patterns, and visual drama that no locally quarried granite can match. The challenge has always been access. Importing exotic stone means committing to a full container load — an impractical proposition for a fabricator who needs three slabs for a kitchen, or a designer who wants one feature wall. Afrika National Granite solves this by curating a collection of exotic stones at our Alrode facility, available for purchase by the individual slab.

The ANG Exotic Collection

Rain Forest Green Marble

Rain Forest Green is among the most visually striking natural stones available anywhere. Quarried in Rajasthan, India, it features bold, swirling patterns of deep green, brown, and cream created by ancient geological folding and metamorphism. No two slabs are alike — each is essentially a one-of-a-kind piece of geological art.

Despite its name, Rain Forest Green is technically a metamorphic stone rather than a true marble, which gives it better hardness and durability than most marbles. However, it is softer than granite and requires careful handling and appropriate sealing for kitchen applications. It is best suited to feature walls, bathroom vanities, fireplace surrounds, furniture surfaces, and low-traffic countertops where its dramatic appearance can be showcased. Rain Forest Green is the stone that clients fall in love with on Instagram and Pinterest — it is a visual centrepiece that drives the entire design scheme.

Patagonia Granite

Patagonia granite is a bold, large-pattern stone with dramatic veining and movement in earth tones — creams, browns, greys, and occasional copper-gold accents. Quarried in Brazil, it is a true granite with the hardness and durability that entails, making it suitable for kitchen countertops and high-use surfaces where softer exotic stones would be impractical.

Patagonia is specified for projects where the client wants the drama of an exotic stone with the performance of granite. Large kitchen islands, feature walls, reception desks, and commercial surfaces all benefit from its bold patterning. Because each slab has significant movement and variation, viewing and selecting specific slabs in person is recommended — which is one of the advantages of buying from ANG's physical inventory rather than ordering sight-unseen from overseas.

Calacatta D'Oro Quartzite

Calacatta D'Oro quartzite offers the aesthetic of Italian Calacatta marble — a white base with dramatic gold and grey veining — but with the hardness and durability of quartzite. This is a critical distinction for specifiers: while Calacatta marble is soft, porous, and prone to etching from acidic substances, Calacatta D'Oro quartzite is harder than granite (7 on the Mohs scale), extremely resistant to scratching and staining, and suitable for kitchen countertops and high-use surfaces.

This makes it the ideal specification for clients who want the prestigious Calacatta look but need the stone to perform in a working kitchen. It is also used for premium bathroom vanities, feature walls, and commercial surfaces where the combination of beauty and performance is valued.

Crystal Rose Granite

Crystal Rose is a warm-toned granite with a pink-grey base colour and visible crystalline quartz, feldspar, and mica in a medium-to-coarse grain structure. It offers a distinctly different aesthetic from the dark granites that dominate the South African market — lighter, warmer, and with a gentle, approachable character that works well in traditional and transitional interior designs.

Crystal Rose is specified for kitchen countertops in warm-toned kitchen schemes, bathroom vanities, fireplace surrounds, and feature surfaces where the client wants natural stone warmth without the visual drama of heavily patterned exotics. It is a true granite with full hardness and durability, making it practical for everyday use.

Carrara Black Granite

Carrara Black granite is a fine-grained dark stone with subtle lighter mineral veining that evokes the elegance of Italian Carrara marble in a dark colourway. It combines the sophisticated, veined aesthetic associated with premium Italian stone with the hardness and durability of granite.

This stone is specified for projects where the designer wants a dark, refined surface with more visual movement than a uniform black granite like Zimbabwe Black but more subtlety than the bold patterns of Patagonia. Kitchen countertops, bathroom surfaces, commercial reception desks, and furniture are common applications.

Why Buy Exotic Stone from ANG?

No Container Import Required

The most significant barrier to using exotic stone in South Africa is the import logistics. Ordering directly from quarries in India, Brazil, or Italy typically requires a full container load — 18 to 28 tonnes depending on container size. For an average fabricator who needs two or three slabs for a kitchen project, or a designer specifying a single feature wall, this minimum is prohibitive. You end up with inventory you may never sell, capital tied up in material, and the risk of damage or quality issues that are difficult to resolve across international borders.

ANG absorbs this risk by importing in volume and stocking exotic materials at our Alrode facility. You purchase by the individual slab — one slab or twenty, whatever your project requires.

Physical Slab Selection

Exotic stones have significant variation between slabs. Rain Forest Green patterns are never identical. Patagonia veining varies dramatically. Calacatta D'Oro veining placement differs from slab to slab. For projects where the specific slab appearance matters — which is most exotic stone projects — you need to see and select the actual slabs that will be used.

At our Alrode facility, you can view every slab in our exotic inventory, select the specific slabs for your project, verify colour and pattern across multiple slabs for matched installations, and reject slabs that do not meet your requirements before any cutting begins. This level of selection is impossible when ordering sight-unseen from an overseas quarry.

Same Supplier for Core and Exotic

Most fabricators and distributors buy their core material — Rustenburg granite — from one supplier and exotic materials from another. Working with ANG for both simplifies your purchasing, consolidates your supplier relationships, and may improve your overall pricing as a higher-volume customer.

Practical Considerations for Exotic Stone Projects

Sealing and Maintenance

Different exotic stones have different maintenance requirements. Rain Forest Green marble requires sealing and is susceptible to acidic etching — it should not be used for kitchen countertops that will be exposed to lemon juice, vinegar, or wine without the client understanding the maintenance commitment. Patagonia granite, Calacatta D'Oro quartzite, Crystal Rose granite, and Carrara Black granite are all true hard stones that require only standard granite sealing and maintenance. Always communicate the specific care requirements of the selected stone to the end client before installation.

Lead Time and Availability

Exotic stone inventory fluctuates based on import schedules and demand. If you are specifying an exotic material for a project with a fixed timeline, confirm current stock levels before finalising the specification. ANG maintains inventory of all five exotic materials but specific slab quantities vary.

Pricing

Exotic stones carry a premium over Rustenburg granite. The premium reflects import costs, the rarity of the material, and the visual distinctiveness it brings to a project. For clients choosing exotic stone, the premium is justified by the unique, unrepeatable character of the material — no engineered stone can replicate what nature produced over millions of years in a Rain Forest Green slab.
